{"id":450,"date":"2015-10-22T16:05:14","date_gmt":"2015-10-22T03:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/?p=450"},"modified":"2019-02-14T16:10:54","modified_gmt":"2019-02-14T03:10:54","slug":"dd-audio-9518-sc-d2-pulls-155-3db","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/dd-audio-9518-sc-d2-pulls-155-3db\/","title":{"rendered":"DD Audio 9518-SC-D2 Pulls 155.3dB!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As a lot of you know <strong>Ashley \u2018MADBASS\u2019 Burrell<\/strong> and myself have been doing <strong>SPL<\/strong> testing for the last five weeks in search of the <strong>155dB+<\/strong> with reliability, well it didn\u2019t start as this but it surely ended that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well it started as clamp testing so we could find where our <strong>SPL<\/strong> system was the most efficient so we could help do the same for a good friends car with a similar set-up, with this we not only tested the amplifiers to find where they were making the most power but also where they were netting the best result with the least amount of power. We noticed the sweet spot was with a lower volume pushing a significant amount of power less than we originally were to net the same result\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_1-360x240.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After that we started working on box positioning and port lengths, over the next several days we spent a good hour every night testing different placements of the box within the <strong>Toyota Vitz<\/strong> till we had covered every possible location with every possible frequency and port length too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that we had the placement, volume &amp; frequency sorted it was time to let the poor little\u00a0<strong>Toyota Vitz<\/strong>\u00a0have a well needed rest to give the batteries a good chance to be topped up again. This rest didn\u2019t last very long though since the batteries only took twenty odd hours to fully charge &amp; I had already started to get a little bit stir-crazy due to the lack of bass while driving. Ok, I\u2019ll admit\u2026 I was going really stir-crazy from the lack of bass!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_2-360x240.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We now were at the point of giving&nbsp;<strong>ABTEC3<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>(Toyota Vitz)<\/strong>&nbsp;a good run for its money so to speak and see what we could squeeze out it with a&nbsp;<strong>SPL<\/strong>&nbsp;test. At this point I had&nbsp;<strong>Ashley<\/strong>&nbsp;asking me what my predictions were and I didn\u2019t even want to speculate anything just in case I was way off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So on went the laptop,\u00a0<strong>Term-Lab<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>SPL Sensor<\/strong>\u00a0and now it was time for me to double\/triple check everything to make sure I hadn\u2019t missed a thing while setting up the Head-Unit\/Car. So\u00a0<strong>Ashley<\/strong>\u00a0checks the meters one more time, I select\u00a0<strong>57Hz<\/strong>, pause, wind the volume up to 25, check with\u00a0<strong>Ashley<\/strong>\u00a0one more time and\u00a0<strong>BURP<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_3-360x240.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>154.8dB<\/strong>\u2026 Now you must understand after all this testing, late nights and effort I was feeling a bit down like I had missed something important. You could say I was on the brink of giving up, but&nbsp;<strong>Ashley<\/strong>&nbsp;convinced me to carry on for a few more days and there was one more thing we had not done up to now\u2026&nbsp;<strong>Sound Deadening<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So out came the\u00a0<strong>SPL Box<\/strong>\/Factory Tool Kit &amp; Spare Tyre, off came the front door cards and\u00a0<strong>George<\/strong>\u00a0&amp;\u00a0<strong>Ashley<\/strong>\u00a0got started preparing\u00a0<strong>ABTEC3<\/strong>\u00a0for two packs of\u00a0<strong>Dynamat<\/strong>\u00a0to be installed while I manned the showroom. A few hours later and all the\u00a0<strong>Sound Deadening<\/strong>\u00a0was sorted and it was time to see if our results went up or if we had just ruined them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_4-360x240.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So it was that time again to set up the&nbsp;<strong>Term-Lab<\/strong>\/Car then&nbsp;<strong>BOOOOOOOM<\/strong>\u2026 Well to be honest it was more like a&nbsp;<strong>\u201cmmmmMMMM\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;since the&nbsp;<strong>Dynamat<\/strong>&nbsp;had made a massive difference to the amount of sound that came out of the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway I\u2019m getting off track here\u2026 So the first result up on the screen and it took a second for it to dig in, it was a\u00a0<strong>154.6dB<\/strong>! My heart sank and I started to think the testing had not paid off but we were not finished yet, so we gave the trusty\u00a0<strong>DD-9518-SC<\/strong>\u00a0a quick rest before resetting the meters and trying at\u00a0<strong>58Hz<\/strong>. This time it dropped to a\u00a0<strong>154db<\/strong>\u00a0flat, but then I remembered something a friend had said about\u00a0<strong>Sound Deadening<\/strong>\u00a0lowering the cars resonant frequency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_5.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_5.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hifihq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/155_5-360x240.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So I gave the <strong>DD-9518-SC<\/strong> &nbsp;a quick <strong>Frequency Sweep<\/strong> to find if the sweet spot had been changed and to no surprises it had dropped <strong>3Hz<\/strong>, so the next step was to test again @ <strong>56Hz<\/strong>. I had to look again when I saw the display on the <strong>Term-Lab<\/strong> show <strong>155dB<\/strong> flat, then again when it showed <strong>155.3dB<\/strong> @ <strong>55Hz<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just to make sure it wasn\u2019t a one off thing, we did another <strong>155+dB<\/strong> two more times! And just after we packed up a good friend even turned up &amp; asked us to set back up so he can film it, which we happily obliged! I must say I am pretty wrapped with getting a <strong>155+dB<\/strong> (which has been my goal ever since I started <strong>Sound-Off\u2019s<\/strong>) and even more wrapped that we have done it with <strong>One Sub-Woofer<\/strong> since this is a <strong>NZ<\/strong> First in my understanding!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is slowly turning into a novel (again) so I\u2019d like to thank <strong>Ashley<\/strong> for pushing me when I was ready to throw the towel in, <strong>Jassa<\/strong> and ALL of <strong>DD Audio<\/strong> for the help over the last year or so and for building such epic and beautiful sounding audio equipment!
